OPAL
Subject Intent:
At Lanesfield we are invested in the OPAL Programme (Outdoor Play and Learning) to improve opportunities for physical activity, resilience, creativity, curiosity and happiness at lunchtimes through play. OPAL is based on the idea that, as well as learning through good teaching, children also learn when they play. As 20% of their time in school is playtime, we want to make sure that this amount of time (equivalent to 1.4 years of primary school) is as good as possible. An OPAL approach promotes a more inclusive play environment in which all children can feel comfortable to express themselves.

We will use our school grounds to their full potential, using the OPAL philosophy that allows children freedom to explore and play in their own imaginative ways. Children will use resources to enhance their play to support them to make mud pies, build dens, dress up, dance to music, or create using their own imagination. Playing, learning and having fun outdoors helps improve wellbeing and resilience. The increase in physical activity supports improved health alongside providing children with the opportunity to develop a life-long appreciation of the natural world.
